This is a page of links to specialised, standalone Linux/Unix software that you might find useful in your audio work in addition to Audacity. The programs listed include tools for recording or mixing, file format conversion and some alternative standalone audio editors or workstations.

[edit] abc2midi 

Can be used to create midi and karaoke files. Other abc notation programs can create sheet music (such as abcm2ps) or convert midi files to abc notation (such as midi2abc).

Useful to convert a midi file into a wav file that can then be edited with Audacity. You can use soundfonts from sites like Freepats  (which has Open Source sound samples and soundfonts) to customize instrument sounds in Timidity.
