Audacity is my preferred audio editing software for a variety of tasks. I regularly use it to record drum, guitar, or bass tracks seperately, using a mixer plugged into a basic soundcard (with one recording channel). I occaisionally record tracks using 'ecasound' and import them afterwards since I have problems recording and playing back simultaneously from Audacity.
