Peter 16Dec16: ToDo-1 This page has many out-dated, untended, projects/projects that we should consider removing from this page.
This is a page of links to specialised, standalone Linux/Unix software that you might find useful in your audio work in addition to Audacity. The applications listed include tools for recording or mixing, file format conversion and some alternative standalone audio editors or workstations.

Contents

Ardour

A complete open source audio workstation for Linux. It can be compiled from source, or fully functional pre-built binaries may be available in some cases from your distribution's main or optional package repository.

Ardour can be built from source code on Windows and Mac too.

SoX

SOX (Sound Exchange) is a great command-line tool for converting between different audio formats and applying certain effects.

Ecasound

Peter 16Dec16: Software last updated "03.01.2014 - Ecasound 2.9.1 released" Looks to be abandoned 3 years ago.

I recommend we remove this from the list

Command line app that does multi-track recording, mixing, and realtime effects processing.

Note that this application appears to have been last updated as Vn 2.9.1 in early 2014, so it may no longer be being actively supported or developed.

GNUsound

Peter 16Dec16: Software last updated "The current version is 0.7.5, which was released 6 July 2008" Looks to be abandoned 8 years ago.

I recommend we remove this from the list

A multi-track sound editor for GNOME 1 and 2.

Note that this application appears to have been last updated as Vn 0.7.5 in summer 2008, so it may no longer be being actively supported or developed.

Rezound

Peter 16Dec16: Latest news: "From CVS to SVN 2008-01-26 21:16 - ReZound has now switched from using CVS to SVN" Looks to be abandoned 8 years ago.

I recommend we remove this from the list

Aims to be a stable, open source, and graphical audio file editor primarily for but not limited to the Linux operating system.

Note that this application appears to have been last updated moving from CVS to SVN in early 2008, so it may no longer be being actively supported or developed.

Sweep

Peter 16Dec16: Last software update: "Latest version: 0.9.3 Sat Apr 12 2008" Looks to be abandoned 8 years ago.

I recommend we remove this from the list

But I do like "Scrubby" - you need to look at the webpage to see ...

An audio editor and live playback tool.

Note that this application appears to have been last updated as Vn 0.9.3 in spring 2008, so it may no longer be being actively supported or developed.

abc2midi

Peter 16Dec16: Website page last updated "2004/01/26" Looks to be abandoned 12 years ago.

As with Mac, I recommend we remove this from the list

Can be used to create midi and karaoke files. Other abc notation applications can create sheet music (such as abcm2ps) or convert midi files to abc notation (such as midi2abc).

Note that this application's website was last updated in early 2004, so it is likely that it is no longer be being actively supported or developed.

Timidity

Peter 16Dec16: Latest update 2.13.13 announced "Last Update: 2004-10-04 00:57:40 JST" Looks to be abandoned 12 years ago.

As with the related Windows page, as with Mac I recommend we remove this from the list

Useful to convert a midi file into a wav file that can then be edited with Audacity. You can use soundfonts from sites like Freepats  (which has Open Source sound samples and soundfonts) to customize instrument sounds in Timidity.

Note that this application was last updated as vn 2.13.13 in autumn 2004, so it may no longer be being actively supported or developed.
