Audacity is now built as a unicode executable.
- Windows 98 and ME do not directly support unicode.
- However, there is a compatibility dll that we could perhaps make use of, unicows.dll. Its use is described on the Microsoft site.
It's most unlikely that the current development team will try these steps out. There are relatively few Windows 98/ME users, and no active Audacity developers with Windows98 machines who want to support it. If there are enthusiasts for building Audacity for Windows98 who want to try it, the information given above should be a good start. If you are such an enthusiast, and you make some progress with this compatibility layer, you're invited to post some more information here.
