Proposal pages help us get from feature requests into actual plans. This page contains proposals for new skins which could be implemented when Theming is working properly.
Proposal pages are used on an ongoing basis by the Audacity development team and are open to edits from visitors to the wiki. They are a good way to get community feedback on a proposal.

  • Note: Proposals for Google Summer of Code projects are significantly different in structure, are submitted via Google's web app and may or may not have a corresponding proposal page.

Proposed Feature

  • Theming should be developed to allow easy switching between the best few alternate skins proposed here. Ideally these should be directly switchable in Preferences, while still allowing the user to customise and load their own from the cache. See Theming HowTo for technical details of how Theming works now.
  • Alternate skins could possibly include a subtly different variation of the current Audacity icon if it was more in keeping with the skin for example, "even more retro", "into the 21st Century". This might reduce some of the pressure for a "new logo". Not everyone may agree with icon variation, there would have to be a consensus on this being allowed. The likely mechanism is that theming will allow most of the interface colors and icons to be changed, but to also change the logo a tick box in preferences must be enabled.

Some links to images of suggested new skins and any alternate icons to go with them can be found on the Proposal New Logo page, as often people proposing new themes provide a new logo too.

Improved Theming

The screenshot below shows a new approach to the interface actually for theming. Each color, image, size, and piece of positioning information is clickable and can be adjusted.
