FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, and it's one of the formats Audacity can read or write. FLAC files take up half the space of WAV files, but with the same quality. In contrast, MP3 files can be typically 1/10 the size of WAV files, but at the expense of some loss in quality.
