This page contains details of Audacity problems that are identified after a version has been released, and so are not included in the "Known Problems" section of the Release Notes for current stable  and Beta versions. This page will be cleared after each release of Audacity, as all issues will by then either be fixed or appear as known problems in the Release Notes for the new version.
For all current source code changes made since 1.3.4 release, see Changes since 1.3.4.

Please do not use this page to report problems you are having with Audacity or suspected bugs, as it will not be regularly checked by the support team. Instead, please see our Reporting Bugs page for advice on how to identify your problem and report it to us if you need to.

Audacity 1.3.4: Released 13 November 2007 for Windows and Linux only

Active issues

All platforms (except Mac)

  • Using Delete or Backspace when the rate in the project rate dropdown is highlighted deletes selected tracks.
Status: Under Investigation
  • In CVS builds from 20 Jan 08, Export Multiple fails with no export processed and no warning if an empty label is encountered.
Status: Under Investigation
  • The preference "Hold recorded data in memory until recording is stopped" is misnamed and in fact caches all recorded and imported audio data (and modified audio data when opening saved projects) for the duration of the session. Therefore it may cause a crash either when making long recordings or opening large files or projects.
Status: Will be reworded, and consideration given to a separate preference for caching recorded and other audio data. Workround: When importing WAV or AIFF files, caching won't be done if the preference to read directly from the original file is enabled.
  • If Audacity is built from CVS with wxWidgets 2.6.4 or later, Escape key does not cancel most dialogues, and Selection Bar spinboxes and the Metadata Editor table are inaccessible to screen readers.
Status: Caused by a bug in wxWidgets. We will put a fix in place for Audacity 1.3.5 released by us, but other builds of Audacity will have this limitation unless built with wxWidgets 2.6.3.
  • Typing a new rate in the Project Rate dropdown does not change the applied rate.
Status: Under investigation. Workround: Select the required rate if it is listed. Otherwise, go to Quality tab of Preferences, select "Other" in "Default Sample Rate" and type the required rate in the box to right of the dropdown.
  • Ability of current CVS builds to change language without restart does not currently work for all interface elements (Selection Toolbar does change correctly).
Status: No workable solution for all elements found yet. Workround: Use View > Toolbars... > Reset Toolbars.
  • Calculation of "disk space remains for recording" is incorrect when recording in 24 bit quality - it gives the same estimate as when recording in 32 bit float.
Status: Currently under investigation, though the problem is identical in 1.2.x versions so may not be a priority to fix. If you are recording in 24 bit, you can record for approximately 50% longer than the time Audacity indicates. See here for more help.
  • Pressing Play (but not spacebar) in a second project when another is already playing stops playback of the first project.
Status: not currently deemed an essential fix and won't hold up 1.3.5 release (though it is a regression on 1.2.6)
  • Metadata (ID3 tags etc.) is not imported and exported fully for all file formats supported by Audacity.
    • All fields are imported and exported for MP3, as ID3 V2.3 tags. Some tools that don't support ID3 V2.3 tags properly will see no tags, or only some, including Windows Media Player which does not see "Year" tags.
    • All fields are exported to FLAC files but none are imported to Audacity on Linux (FLAC tags import properly on Windows). Not all players read all the fields properly, especially the Comments field.
    • All fields are exported to and imported from Ogg Vorbis files, but not all players read the Vorbis comments fully (VLC seems to only show them in the Advanced display)
    • Only a limited range of tags is exported to WAV files, and re-import is patchy. Player support is very patchy, as there is not a single standard for tagging WAV files.
Status: Above is better than previous releases, so won't hold up 1.3.5 release. Patches to provide full orthogonal tag import and export would be welcomed.
  • Projects created by Audacity 1.1.x may open incorrectly.
Status: Still needs further work to resolve this.

Windows only

  • "Welcome" screen cannot be read by some screen readers, in particular JAWS and NVDA.
Status: awaiting investigation
  • Internet Explorer or Firefox are not brought to top on some Windows machines when clicking on URLs in help system.
Status: under investigation.

Linux only

  • System copy of LibSoundTouch is not detected correctly. Building Audacity from the source tarball uses the system copy of libSoundTouch (>= 1.3.0) if available. If no system copy is available, then the Change Tempo and Change Pitch effects are disabled and cannot be used. On Debian and derived Linux systems this detection fails even when libSoundTouch is installed, because the pkg-config file used to detect libSoundTouch is named incorrectly.
Workaround: Either install the latest version of libSoundTouch (1.3.1), or symlink the installed file (/usr/lib/pkgconfig/libSoundTouch.pc) to the correct file name (/usr/lib/pkgconfig/soundtouch-1.0.pc), e.g. sudo ln -s /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libSoundTouch.pc /usr/lib/pkgconfig/soundtouch-1.0.pc. Requires 5th May 2008 CVS or newer to work.
Status: Bug in Debian. Bug report raised. [1]

Cleared in CVS

These problems have been cleared in the latest development code , meaning that if you compile Audacity yourself from that code, these issues should not occur. Where applicable, they will still be present in the released binary versions available on our download page .

All Platforms (except Mac)

  • In CVS builds between 22 Jan 08 and 02 May 08, the Metadata Editor does not pop up in a first run of Audacity without first unchecking/rechecking its preference.
  • Mix and Render deletes any selected Label, Time or MIDI tracks. Workround: Shift-Select only the audio tracks required for the mix.
  • CVS builds between 1.3.4 release and 25 April 08 unable to record from devices whose drivers give the same name to their input and output device (mainly affects USB devices such as USB turntables and interfaces). 1.3.4 release is *not* affected. Workround: On Windows, set the device concerned to be system default then set the recording device in Audacity to "Microsoft SoundMapper". Otherwise, use the 1.3.4 release, or build from the latest CVS sources.
  • Selecting a new listed rate once in the Project Rate dropdown does not change the applied rate. Workround: Select the rate twice (or more) in succession; or overtype with the desired rate; or go to the Quality tab of Preferences and select or enter the rate there.
  • Envelope Tool: Removing a control point by dragging left or right off the waveform of a stereo pair can cause the channels to have different envelopes.
  • When cursor is at time zero, zooming causes the waveform position to move rightwards so that the cursor is no longer visible.
  • Export Multiple: If a colon is typed in a label, an invalid file is exported instead of the colon being rejected as an illegal file name character. Other illegal characters in labels cause an invalid export for MP2, MP3 and OGG, and a crash when exporting FLAC. MP3 multiple export has a redundant "Track Number 0" initial tag edit screen, and can't be run unattended because each tag edit screen only appears after the preceding export.
  • After previewing an effect (even if canceled), focus is lost to the main Project window. Mainly an issue for keyboard users. Workround: Use ALT + F6 to return focus to the effect window.
  • Project Recovery: When recovering a crashed session which had multiple projects open, more projects are recovered than previously existed, and they contain incorrect data. Project irrecoverable if a file is imported then another track added the autosave interval.
  • "Show Clipping" in the View menu likely to make Audacity unresponsive if enabled with longer tracks (typically, in excess of 10 - 20 minutes).
  • "Delay" plug-in causes excessive clipping on most tracks. Workround: replace the plug-in with this revised version .
  • Equalization effect is not applied and curves not reloaded when using linear frequency scale. In either linear or log view, preset curves that are changed but not saved may be lost.
  • When recording with "Show Clipping" enabled, a crash occurs if attempting to zoom in beyond default zoom level.
  • Opening project files created by Audacity 1.0.0 does not show a strong enough warning that opening the file may corrupt it.
  • .mpa files are detected wrongly as MPEG-4 audio files (AAC) and rejected, when in fact they are normally MPEG-1 audio files, and can be opened using libMAD.
  • Export to external program via command line produces no export, nor any error message (regression on 1.3.3).
  • Slider jammed on some systems when exporting to WAV/AIFF with Advanced Mixing Options enabled
  • Some strings are not translated in the interface, although translations exist in the language files. Note however that Beta versions of Audacity will always have incomplete translations to some extent or another - only stable releases have a "string freeze" and translation cycle.
  • Metadata editor only appears of its own accord for the first export.
  • Playback of a file restarts if a second file is opened during play.
  • Nyquist generate plug-ins (such as Click Track and Pluck) only generate the correct length with a Project Rate of 44100 Hz, with proportionately incorrect results for other rates.
  • Links in the Welcome Message and other dialogues such as the LAME download button do not open in many platform / browser combinations.
  • The Stereo-To-Mono effect corrupts the Audacity internal project structure, and so results in a crash shortly after it is used.
  • Trying to build with MP3 or Ogg importing disabled fails with a compile error. This patch  fixes it (thanks to Gentoo) and is now in CVS.
  • With foreign languages (at least French and German) selected, MP3 metadata tags for "Artist Name", "Track Title", "Album Title" and "Track Number" are not filled, so not seen by media applications. Instead, duplicated custom tags with these identifiers are created.

Linux/Unix only

  • Where temporary directories can be changed by other users, Audacity freezes after stopping recording, and potential exists for file/folder deletion via a symlink attack. Audacity now applies a patch by Michael Schwendt that checks temporary directory ownership.
  • The audacity.1  man page is out of date, and contains several factual errors.
