Planned Release Announcement Text

Audacity 2.1.3 replaces all previous versions.

Audacity has only partial support for Mac Sierra. We found that on a subset of Mac Sierra machines some important extensions to the core of Audacity become unavailable. Full details here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Partial_Support_for_Mac_Sierra_in_2.1.3. This problem also affects Audacity 2.1.2. Audacity 2.1.3 takes steps to reduce the problems, but does not fix them entirely. Audacity 2.1.3 is also the last version of Audacity that will officially support Windows XP.

New and changed in Audacity 2.1.3:

  • Audacity 2.1.3 now properly supports Windows 10 (thanks to an upgrade of the PortAudio library) and on MacOS has some previously missing support for Magic Mouse/Trackpad (thanks to Paul Licameli).
  • New features, see updated manual for details:
    • New Distortion effect, Rhythm Track (was called Click Track) and Sample Data Import (thanks to Steve Daulton). Also effects are no longer grayed-out when in pause.
    • New scrub ruler and 'pinned' option so the waveform moves and the recording/playing head stays still. (Paul)
    • New features in Timer Record (Mark Young & Steve)
  • On Mac, audacity.app is now added to /Applications/ directly rather than adding a folder there.
  • 64 bugs/annoyances in 2.1.2 fixed of which 15 were long standing issues. Also lots done (Paul again) to systematically deal with memory leaks.

Thanks to all involved in making this release, especially translators who don't normally get enough thanks for the work they do.

Headline Features

  • (Windows) Windows 10 is now supported (there should be no "Internal PortAudio Error" or failure to find any devices as long as the built-in audio devices are enabled).
  • (macOS) We now support Trackpad and Magic Mouse horizontal scroll without SHIFT key and Trackpad pinch and expand to zoom at the pointer.
  • PortAudio upgraded to r1966 - includes Windows 10 fix.
  • Extensive work to eliminate memory leaks
  • Pinned (fixed and centered) play/record head for playing and recording
  • New scrubbing features
    • Scrub Ruler
    • Scrub Toolbar (off by default, enable it at View > Toolbars)
  • Effects and Generators:
    • Effects, edits and other functionality are now not grayed-out when paused during playback or recording and thus the editing functions can be selected and performed
    • New Distortion effect (replaces Leveller)
    • Change Tempo and Change Pitch have new options to use the higher quality but slower SBSMS algorithm, which ensures the selection length does not change and no content is lost.
    • Click Track generator updated and renamed to "Rhythm Track" with improved sounds and new "Swing amount" control for unequal beat duration.
    • New Generator for Sample Data Import
  • New and changed shortcuts
    • ALT + RIGHT to Move to Next Label and ALT + LEFT to Move to Previous Label. These shortcuts allow the name of the label and its order in the labels in that track to be read by screen readers. As well as moving the edit position, these shortcuts jump playback to the requested label.
    • The shortcut for Play/Stop and Set Cursor has changed from SHIFT + A to the more easy to use X.
  • New and changed menu items
    • New Edit Menu items "Store Cursor Position" and "Select > Cursor to Stored Cursor Position" (during transport, the position of the playback or recording cursor is stored)
      • Edit > "Region Save" and "Region Restore" renamed to "Store Region" and "Retrieve Region" respectively
    • New Tracks Menu item "Type to Create a Label (on/off)" (turning it off prevents shortcuts accidentally creating labels in the focused label track)
  • New options and preferences
    • New option when exporting MP3 to mix to mono
    • New recording preferences for naming of recorded tracks
  • New Timer Record features:
    • Options on completion e.g. Save and/or Export, quit Audacity, shut down (on Windows).
    • More informative dialogs, including warnings on disk space.
    • Protection against accidental canceling.
  • (Linux) On Linux only, Audacity now supports FFmpeg/libav up to avformat/avcodec 57.x.x, which is compatible with current FFmpeg 3.x.x releases.
  • (Mac) On Mac, audacity.app is now added to /Applications/ directly rather than adding a folder there.
  • Audacity is now digitally signed on Mac and Windows (but not Win XP).

Headline Features (held over)

Take these with a big grain of salt... they could be vapourware.

  • Classic Noise Removal available again as optional enabled built-in (A G+ conversation)
Gale 08Mar16: I support improving Noise Reduction rather [than] reintroducing legacy effects. I think the more sensible Noise Reduction defaults have helped to some extent.
  • Peter 18Jul16: I strongly support Gale's view here.
  • More compact and more flexible menu on tracks.
  • Color-selectable Spectrogram (later will go when we have theming)
  • Harmonic separation effect.
  • Legacy Theming Support fixed. Possibly even with Theming panel in preferences again, via mod-theme.
  • Export Multiple - More flexibility in automatic naming.


    • Operating system support

    • Audacity 2.1.3 is planned to be the final version for Windows XP and for OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Removing support for obsolete operating systems makes it easier for us to support features in current operating systems.
    Gale 28Nov16: Perhaps James has forgotten, but it was agreed by Team to make 2.1.3 the final version for XP and Snow Leopard and to announce that in 2.1.3. If James wants to overturn that he needs to call a vote. We don't have a support lifecycle so we need to do the proper thing by users and tell them in advance of support removal. It might be acceptable to say this on the download page for 2.1.3 instead but it is not acceptable IMO to remove support without warning. Steve requested this information in the release notes so at least he and I think likewise.
    • Peter 28Nov16: I too agree that users need fair and clear warning of the dropping of support for Windows and macOS versions. I would put it on Release Notes AND the download page - and also on the Forum Windows and MAc sections as a sticky.

    Won't be reported on

    These were some pieces of work done that won't be reported on in the release announcement.

    Build/Infrastructure

    • Signing of Mac and Windows executables now an essential.
    • Patches to wxWidgets need to be better documented. What is each patch for? Need to be applied to our GitHub copy of wxWidgets too.
    • Update workarounds for wxWidgets page, and track any reports back via wxWidgets Trac.
    • Linux ASSERT Issues Not addressed yet to a safe level. We need code to guarantee we are building with patched wxWidgets under linux, I think.
    • Pulse Audio issue leads to plan to keep sound card steams open. Deferred pending test of PortAudio update.
    • Silent write failure on disk full is reported on Wikipedia and needs to be cleared.

The P2s need closer examination, and RM may decide that one or more of them block release, even at the last moment. The PXs (if any) might possibly be P1s - so we need to know about them.
