Timeline

  • 1st April 2015 - 2.1.1 Release cycle started.
  • 11th April 2015: RM (James) and timeline announced.
  • 1st May 2015 - 7th May 2015: Kick-the-tyres testing of an alpha.

We had a two week postponement of Semifreddo, as we were not ready for it. Then, revised timeline:

  • 8th June 2015 - 14th June 2015: Semifreddo (wording fixes; small tweaks to parameters and similar)
  • 15th June 2015 - 28th June 2015: FROZEN (testing, including installer)
  • 29th June 2015 - 8th July 2015: RC1 (testing, up to a week)
  • 6th July 2015 - 11th July 2015: RC2 (testing)
  • 12th July 2015 - 14th July 2015: RC3 (testing) <--- We Are Here
  • 15th July: Release Audacity 2.1.1.

This is a notes page to help us in preparing the announcement for 2.1.1. It might also help with highlighting areas needing more test focus.

Planned Release Announcement Text

Audacity 2.1.1 replaces all previous versions.

Peter 13Jul15: The improvements to Timeline are also a major new feature as they improve the usability of the Timeline no end. Timeline can be just as useful as scrubbing in locating a particular piece or audio, and personally I tend to use the updated Timeline for this as I find the UI much more intuitive and usable than that of scrubbing/seeking. See Using Timeline Quick-Play and Timeline Right-Click menu in the Manual.
  • The most visible new feature is scrubbing and seeking, including backwards play.
  • Also new, you can add and remove effects from the generate and effects menus.
  • Over 50 bugs have been addressed with this release. Audacity now works faster with longer projects, projects of about 2 hours duration, than it did before.
  • Effects now have presets. A new Limiter replaces the Hard Limiter effect. There's a new version of Vocal Removal, a cross-fade effect and 'classic filters' available as an opt-in effect.
  • There's also been lots of work behind the scenes, including VI usability enhancements and upgrade to new libraries. Fuller details on the changes since 2.1.0 can be found here.

This query shows us possibly problematic P1 and P2 bugs right now. If there is a P1 in there, the answer is 'NO'. The P2s need closer examination, and RM may decide that one or more of them block release, even at the last moment.

This query by Gale bugs fixed for 2.1.1 automatically gives fixes done since 29th March. Bugzilla reports in wiki can probably do this too, but I've some more experiments to do to find out how.

Developer WIBN lists are list of things they are actively looking at. QA/Support WIBN lists are lists of things they are lobbying for. These are aspirational changes. The closer we get to June the less likely the ones still listed in this section are to be in.

James' WIBN List

  • 276 [P2] Repeatedly start/stopping Pulse Audio. A fix by keeping the audio card open. Also means monitoring persists.
  • 673 [P2] Installer language does not carry through to executable. Even if done for 2.1.1 we will not have inno in all Audacity languages for 2.1.1.
  • Diags - Glitch detection (counting) of overruns and underruns.
  • Diags - Command line options, and run very simple test, e.g. generate DTMF from Travis build to get us started on automated test.
  • Diags - mod-diag as built-in module. Also to help get built-in modules working for other reasons.

James' Notes

  • We will not be supporting wx3 with 2.1.1 and that needs to be clear in the announcement.
  • The shift to binary in autorecovery is potentially a little dangerous. We need to review whether there are integrity (part written) file issues, which would affect us if there are large histories. Possibly needs a checksum on the end to guard against that? Possibly useful test is with a deliberately corrupted auto recovery file, and see what happens.
  • The shift to built-in effects using the new RT code is potentially dangerous. Possible issues include these effects offering (broken) RT preview, parameters from Chirp appearing in ToneGen (they share the same code). EQ and Noise Reduction possibly the most likely to have problems, as they have non-standard parameters.
