Code going into 2.1.2

This is a notes page to help us in preparing the announcement for 2.1.2. It might also help with highlighting areas needing more test focus.

Gale: If this text is reused for the main announcement the links to the Manual will need changing to their o/man equivalent.

  • Preparatory code changes for FishEye. This is not visible to users in 2.1.2 but any of the following could theoretically have bugs as a result of the changes:
    • Mouse clicks in the waveform
    • Zooming
    • Timeline
    • Selections might play other than the selected audio
    • Multi-clip (e.g. clips could overlap).

Planned Release Announcement Text

Audacity 2.1.2 replaces all previous versions.

We have made several improvements to the spectrogram view of tracks which are particularly valuable for vocal work. Thanks to Paul Licameli.

  • New option 'Spectral Reassignment'. This algorithm deduces a 'finer' spectrogram for vocal work.
  • Improvements to Pitch (EAC) - cleaner (sharper) display.
  • Spectrogram Settings are now available per-track.

We have put a lot of work into upgrading the key wxWidgets library we use from version 2.8.x to version 3.0.2. This fixes many bugs in Audacity on Linux. Thanks particularly to Martin Steghöfer, Leland Lucius, David Avery. Because there was so much work involved in moving to wx3 we were unable to make many of the other changes we wanted to make for 2.1.2.

We do not yet officially support Windows 10. The main problem we know of is that all audio devices on a machine need to have Windows 10 compatible drivers for Audacity to be able to play or record. Windows 10 drivers can often be obtained directly from the device manufacturer, and increasingly Windows updates are supplying these by default. The problem should reduce as more sound cards are included. It's older sound cards that are most likely to be a problem. See [link] for more information and workarounds.

Gale 23Aug15: I think we might be able to claim "official" provisional support for Windows 10 with the caveats given. The issue is not reported as often as the WDM-KS crashes in 2.0.4 and is likely to diminish as the upgrade spike flattens and OEM's catch up with new drivers. I have suggested a different gloss as above - may be too long and can be trimmed but not so off-putting.

James 24Aug: I've changed the wording. Am open to it being changed further. I think we go with "not yet officially supported" for 2.1.2 and then for 2.1.3 "provisional support for", if the number of Win10 complaints dwindles (especially if we are able to figure out how to retry port-audio to pick up just the working drivers).

  • Gale 24Aug15: I only improved the existing meaning at the moment, but I have comments.
    • Do we know of any release notable issues except for audio devices?
    • If not, I think "not officially supported" is probably too cautious. I coined that phrase but it was only intended for use before we got 2.1.1 in the wild with millions of Win 10 users, to know what we were faced with. Clearly Audacity does work with some non-Windows 10 drivers - given the fairly small number of complaints, it may even be working with the majority of such, as it does for me.
    • For those who don't read the link, I think we should say "from the website of the computer or motherboard manufacturer". Saying "Device manufacturer" may send users to the Realtek site for generic Realtek drivers. That may work OK if there is no other choice, but should not be the first thing to try.
    • Do you have evidence that "increasingly Windows updates are supplying these by default"? One should definitely apply Windows Updates or keep trying Device Manager updates, but again this is not the first thing to try. Even if working, Windows Update/Device Manager drivers are usually feature-trimmed (e.g. lacking stereo mix or headphones-out support) compared to drivers obtained through the manufacturer's site. So I think the emphasis is wrong.
    • I think the difference between in-place upgrades to Win 10 and buying a machine that comes with Win 10 is much more meaningful to the user than talking about "older soundcards". As far as I know, no-one yet has complained about a new machine that came with Windows 10, and I don't want to put off those who will be buying new.

  • Simple on/off switch for spectral selection: Remove the choice for Spectral Selection from the Track dropdown menu - and add a Spectrograms Preference which is mirrored in some other easy-to-access control in the main project window. See Proposal Development of spectral selection and manipulation.
    • Peter 28Aug15: With 2.1.2 we do have a sort of switch for this but it is far from "simple". It's hard to find imo and the interaction between the global setting in Preferences and the local per-track setting in TCP is more than subtle (I speak as someone currently trying to work out how to document the behaviors)
    • Gale 28Aug15: I continue to argue that the simplest solution in terms of interactions is to dispense with Spectrograms Preferences. As it is now, it is too hard to reset all tracks to default settings once some tracks are not default. And enabling Spectral Selection Toolbar should enable Spectral Selection when it is not already on (though Spectral Selection Toolbar should not be required to enable Spectral Selection). And yes, the one "switch" we do have is too hard to find.

  • Far fewer binding prefs set up by default. The most common high value ones only. Instead use import for a fully populated list, if desired. Power users (the people who use all the shortcuts) will typically set up their own.
