OpenSebJ is an Open Source pre and post production music mixing tool; allowing both realtime composition and pre-setup replay. This unique mix makes OpenSebJ a creative and versatile audio tool. Written in C# .Net 2.0 utilising DirectX9c.

Another recording program that will record from the sound card whilst listenting to streaming radio etc. I have used software that I downloaded from ReTell download page and use it to record streaming audio to listen to later when I don't have an internet connection. The software is aimed at phone recording, but the software works just fine for recording streaming audio. The site talks about 957ADV and 957PRO software, but in fact the two softwares are the same. After you have installed the software, go to the hardware tab and under the input line selection box, choose (probably) StereoMix . Sound cards can vary, so if that does not record the streaming audio, just go through the different choices until you find the one that works.

Open source modular tracker for Windows, with VST/VSTi support. Great for creating drum beats, synthesizer work, etc... Recommended for people who don't mind learning a new way of writing electronic music. Not necessarily for the technologically impaired (This is a general rule for all trackers)

Open source program for ripping audio CDs and converting audio between different formats (WAV/MP3/Ogg and others). It also has its own real-time recorder (single-track) that I have found to be very efficient, never skipping.

Free, Open Source, program to mix audio and video. Also useful to extract audio from a video, and compress video files.

Kristal Audio Engine

Freeware for personal, non-commercial use. It has a very nice GUI interface, supports VST plugin (w/ GUI). Very intuitive to use too.

Quartz Audio Master

Records audio and MIDI, includes full MIDI editing support. The freeware version doesn't have all the features of their commercial product (example: limited to four audio tracks maximum), but it is still quite usable in its own right.

Percussion Studio

If you are into drums and percussion - particularly African / Caribbean hand drumming and related sounds, then this bit of software is a must. There are loads of rhythms and instruments on the website, but it is also dead easy to sample your own instruments and incorporate them into your own rhythms. Using a bit of software like Audacity, it is relatively easy to edit the wav file to adjust the sound, and particularly to remove the dead space at the beginning of the recording.

  • Pinkjimiphoton note: percussion studio is a $29.00 shareware program.... just a heads up

Anvil Studio

Anvil Studio™ is a freeware Windows XP/2000/ME/98/95 program designed for people who want to: record music with MIDI and Audio equipment, compose music for MIDI and Audio equipment, Sequence music with MIDI equipment, or play with music using a computer and sound card.

There is a free version and a commercial version. I use the free version to extract drum and bass tracks from midi files to make .wav file tracks for my recordings. The free version will not convert midi to .wav, but you can use another program to record the midi file to a .wav file as it plays, however it is not accessible for people using a screenreader, due to its design.

WaveSurfer is an Open Source tool for sound visualization and manipulation. It has been designed to suit both novice and advanced users. WaveSurfer has a simple and logical user interface that provides functionality in an intuitive way and which can be adapted to different tasks. It can be used as a stand-alone tool for a wide range of tasks in speech research and education. Typical applications are speech/sound analysis and sound annotation/transcription. WaveSurfer can also serve as a platform for more advanced/specialized applications. This is accomplished either through extending the WaveSurfer application with new custom plug-ins or by embedding WaveSurfer visualization components in other applications.
