  • ability to import WAV files from Adobe Audition, and take the Cart Chunk data, and create the "header" data for the audio file.
  • Automatic track alignment - shift the target track around and subtract it from the source track. Keep the alignment that minimizes this distance. More sophisticated implementation: a scale-invariant distance measure, such as the cosine distance and dynamic time warping, which can "stretch" parts of one track to align better with another.
  • Ability to output to file/label the time location of the cursor.
  • New draw tool to change the curve draw not dot by dot but a range of dots like a "brush size" or like the "LIQUIFY" tool in Adobe PhotoShop where the size of the brush can be set to reach the numbers of dots it will make effect over.
  • An automated way to perform actions/effects on labeled sections (tracks) individually, rather than working a track at a time.
  • Audacity will sometimes open up and run under the wrong operating system. That should never, ever happen. E.g. There is an Intel version of Mac Audacity and there is a Motorola version. One of them will open and seem to run on the wrong computer creating all sorts of "magic" problems. The problem we see most is downloading and installing the correct lame and have it fail because the actual Audacity is wrong.
  • Audacity should never, ever open a sound format it doesn't completely understand. "How come my five minute sound file flies by in fifteen seconds and sounds like a scared chipmunk?"
  • Change the following error message "Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate." to something more insightful like "Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate or run the [Windows | Mac | Linux] diagnostic program at http://www.aud....." ...or something equally revealing. Plus 2 votes
    • Richard Ash commented: that would require that audacity knew why there was a problem. Exactly the same error comes back if the permissions are wrong, the user is not in the audio group, the sound device is locked by another program - so it's non-trivial to work out what is wrong and display a useful message.
  • The normalize number entry box in Audacity 1.3.x needs to mask for numbers only. I needed to normalize a passage to -3 so I put "-3" in the box.... Not only did it not crash, it actually did it, clipping, distortion, and all.
  • Fix The VU Meter: First, it's not an ANSI C16.5 VU meter, it's a digital peak meter, but it's still broken. It would seem that the Audacity sound meters measure only one side of the waveform, a behavior expressly forbidden in several august publications (EBU Technical Publication 3205-E Section 2.4 Reversibility Error. Less than 0.5 dB & IEC 60268-17 ANSI C16.5 Reversibility error less than 0.2VU, generally 0.2 dB)
