Wording
- The list is for finalising text that appears in Audacity.
- This is a companion list to the Release Checklist
- This is a companion list to the Documentation Checklist
Other source code changes that may require changes in text in Audacity as a consequence do not belong here. That is, don't put a wording change here unless it is needed with the code as it is now. Changes to the GUI such as moving buttons or controls from one place to another don't belong here either because they are not just wording changes. Also, only changes to documents that are actually compiled into executable builds, such as HelpText.cpp, should be included here - all other changes go to Documentation Checklist.
I largely agree, though that does mean that (relatively trivial) wording changes (like that to the LAME download button arising from a LAME installer) would have to be done at the time by the person doing the coding, or otherwise leave them and move the item in to "Wording" after coding? - GA

Autorecovery.cpp
Current text:
"You have chosen not to recover any projects. You will not be able to recover those projects later if you change your mind. Do you really want to continue without recovering?"
Suggested replacement:
"Are you sure you don't want to recover any projects? They can't be recovered later."
Additionally, (unknown to GA where this text is in the code), change the heading of this dialogue from "Really not recover projects?" to "Confirm?"
Preferences
Directories tab
Current text:
"Auto save interval [ ] minutes"
Suggested replacement:
If [MM] changes autosave to strict interval saving, as per aim-to, change 'interval' back to 'every'.
The coding change probably won't get done in time for 1.4.0 -JC
Interface tab
Current text:
"Minimum of dB mode display range"
Suggested replacement:
- "Display range minimum for waveform (dB) view" or
- "Display range minimum for dB view"
OK...Audacious
This button is currently used in Welcome Screen and About Audacity. However, not everyone is comfortable with "Audacious" and screen reader users may be confused by lack of a simple "OK". As we apparently want to be more concise and impersonal, and avoid long buttons, it's suggested we should simply drop "Audacious" and replace it with "OK".
Project.cpp
Current text, when opening a 1.2.6 Project in 1.3.4:
"This file was saved by Audacity 1.2.6 and the format\nhas changed. This version of Audacity can try to\nopen it, but there may be problems. You should back up\nyour project first, to be safe.\n\nAfter you save the file with this version of Audacity,\nyou will not be able to open the file in the older\nversion anymore. Would you like to open\nthis file right now anyway?"
Suggested alternative:
"This file was saved by Audacity 1.2.6. You can open\nthe file with this version of Audacity, but if you save it with this version\nyou will no longer be able to open it in older versions.\n\nOpen this file now?"
Currently:
"Enter new samplerate:
Suggested alternatives:
- "New sample rate (Hz):"
- "New Sample Rate (Hz):"
- "New sample rate" with "Hz" at the end of the box.
Whatever we decide, we should have "sample rate" as separate words and "Hz" enclosed in some kind of brackets but should they be "( )" or "[ ]"? Just this example shows many consistency issues which should be discussed post 1.4.0.
