Completed Proposal Menu Reorganisation/Layout Ideas
Edgar 22 Jan 2010 split the Help menu into Tools and Help :
Tools
Help
Note that in the above "About" item there should be no ellipsis -- the use of an ellipsis signifies that the user will be asked to supply additional information before the action can be completed.
This also makes the Help menu very short. I think we could expand upon a little:

Gale 25 Jan 2010
Gale: If we are going to split "Tools" into a separate menu, then how about Help is:
Front PageQuick HelpFrequently Asked QuestionsTutorialsPreferences
This matches (sort of) with the Splash Screen. I don't mind your two root items for Manual, though, if you can think of something better than "Manual Topics" (we might have to lose "(in browser)" if we have two root Manual items).
Bill 23 Jan 2010
Bill: I was focused mainly on re-organizing the Export section
James: The save-compressed-copy-of-project has in my view got way too much prominence in the menu and the menu string is rather long too. I actually think it is an option in Export. Could it be Export->Compressed-Project instead?
Bill: I guess you could make a case that a "compressed project" is an export, but really it is a native Audacity format, so not technically an export. But I have no strong feelings either way. I have no idea how many people would use Save-compressed anyway.
What would we want to call the first item in the Export fly-out? I called it "Mix" because that is what is exported and kind of emphasized the fact that Audacity automatically mixes on export. But an Export>Selection could also create a mix.
Gale: "Mix" should be "All", I think. I don't really think you can call "Save Compressed Copy..." an Export. It is a sort of hybrid, nonetheless there is an .aup file and I think having it as an export will be confusing. I think there is a reasonable case for being bold and having "Save <add a word if you want>" as the export function, and "Project" as a root item from which cascades the two "Save Projects" and "Save Compressed Copy...", and "Open Project". We could still have a "Quick Save" (i.e. quick export") and a "Save" for full export options.

Edgar: how about:
Bill: I don't like hiding the "Save" items under the "Project" fly-out.
-- Ed 24 January 2010 We do not allow "saving" anything except projects. How about changing the wording a little...

Note that I include Check Dependencies... under "Project >" because I think (I might be wrong) that dependencies relate only to projects. I also added the last three items for completion.
