Size tests on W10

before adding an issue to the UP tracker I wanted to do some size testing.

On W10 I was working with a one-hour mono chirp.

2.4.2

  1. Save Empty 0
  2. Generate Chirp 612 MB
  3. Amplify 1.19 GB
  4. Bass&Treble 1.79 GB
  5. Phaser 2.39 GB
  6. Save Project 612 MB
  7. Exit 612 MB

second pass

  1. Open Project 612 MB
  2. Generate Chirp 612 MB
  3. Amplify 1.19 GB
  4. Bass&Treble 1.79 GB
  5. Phaser 2.39 GB
  6. Save Project 612 MB
  7. Exit 612 MB

So with 2.4.2 the size grows with the application of each effect - but the space is vacuumed back to the size of the original chirp - and the vacuuming does not take long.

UP-3.0.0

  1. Save Empty 24 kb
  2. Generate Chirp 628 MB
  3. Amplify 1.25 GB
  4. Bass&Treble 1.88 GB
  5. Phaser 2.50 GB
  6. Save Project 2.50 GB
  7. Exit 2.50 GB

Second pass

  1. Open Project 2.50 GB
  2. Generate Chirp 2.50 GB
  3. Amplify 2.50 GB
  4. Bass&Treble 2.50 GB
  5. Phaser 2.50 GB
  6. Save Project 2.50 GB
  7. Exit 2.50 GB

So note that the original Chirp in 3.0.0's 628 MB is only slightly larger than 2.4.2's 612 MB

From the first run of 2.0.0 it looks as though every effect applied looks to roughly double the size of the data set No space is released on exit from Audacity.

Then on the next pass of 3.0.0 through the same effects the size stays rock solid at 2.5GB

The conclusions I draw from this are: a) we are not vacuuming b) on exit from the first pass 3..0.0 Audacity/SQLite knows it does not need all that space but does not release it c) for the second pass Audacity/SQLite uses the unused space efficiently d) I would expect with good vacuuming to get back to c. 628MB

But Steve is right Exit from Audacity in 3.0.0 takes a long time with a big project - watching the project folder one can observe a lot of journaling,

And the other space-hungry think that happens is that during the Save a temporary .bak file is created doubling the size on the second pass to 5GB for a while (this could cause some disk space limited users some problems).
